Tuesday, 23. April 2002: Dr. Eric Grove & Rob White

When a team of underwater investigators located HMS Hood, the world war two battle cruiser sunk by the Bismarck in 1941, Hull University's Dr Eric Grove played a key part. He was a consultant to the team headed by Rob White, whose search was funded by Channel 4 and ITN and filmed for a TV documentary, and interviewed on the programme as a naval historian. Using equipment ranging from sonar scanners to logbooks and diaries, the team eventually located the vessel, three thousand metres down in the North Atlantic. The team filmed the wreck, but touched nothing, save for leaving a plaque on board to the memory of the 1,400 men who died.
